OPTICAL SMOKE ALARMS

The smoke alarms from Jacob Jensen are optical. Optical smoke alarms detect smoke and warn you before you get smoke inhalation. Inside the optical smoke alarm is a constant beam of light that is connected to a sensor. If the light beam is interrupted by smoke, the alarm will go off immediately so you can get to safety.

Did you know that...

  • Smoke alarms should be placed in the entrance/staircase and in all bedrooms for optimal coverage. If you have multiple floors, there should be at least one smoke alarm on each floor?

  • Approximately 70,000 people experience a fire in their home every year?

  • Especially the elderly and young people who have recently moved out are at risk as they do not have a smoke alarm?

  • You should replace your smoke alarm every 10 years? Sensors and other components can become less sensitive over time, which can affect the effectiveness of the alarm.

Smoke alarm installation and placement

  • The smoke alarm should be placed on the ceiling, as high up as possible and at least half a metre away from walls, doors and windows. This prevents smoke from escaping without you realising it. Do not place the smoke alarm too close to the bathroom, kitchen or stove as vapour, cooking fumes and wood smoke can cause false alarms.

  • In the basement, the smoke alarm should be installed in the stairwell.

  • The smoke alarm can be mounted on the wall if ceiling mounting is not possible, for example due to textile ceilings or ceilings with insufficient stability. For wall mounting, there must be 30-50 cm distance to the ceiling.

Operation and maintenance

  • We recommend that you test your smoke alarm at regular intervals to make sure it works. Test at least once a year and preferably more often.

  • Never paint over your smoke alarm and replace it every ten years. Take it to the recycling centre as battery waste.

  • Also test when you come home from a long holiday. Your smoke alarm will beep if the batteries need changing, and if you haven't reacted to it, the alarm may be completely out of battery.
